Coast Guard to conduct increased environmental awareness operations

October 9, 2015

SAN DIEGO - Coast Guard responders are scheduled to conduct enhanced operations in Mission Bay and Oceanside Harbor in order to educate the public and identify existing or potential hazards to the maritime environment, October 14-21.

Responders will not only be investigating potential pollution threats, but also educating marina operators, tenants and the boating public about the requirements for reporting oil spills.

This activity is planned as a proactive approach to prevent future negative impacts to the marine environment, natural resources and property.

“It is so important that the entire San Diego community take an active role in preventing harm to the environment,” said Lt. Kristin Driscoll, chief of Incident Management Division at Sector San Diego. “Keeping San Diego clean and beautiful has to be a holistic team effort. The overarching goal here is really to raise awareness and prevent pollution incidents before they occur.”

Responders will be patrolling local marinas by foot, in vehicles and small boats.
