November 23, 2014

BALTIMORE — The Coast Guard rescued two boaters Sunday near Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse in Annapolis.Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Baltimore received a call at approximately 3 p.m., stating two males were aboard a sinking boat.A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Annapolis and crews from Maryland Natural Resources Police and Maryland State Police launched to assist. The 45-foot MLB crew arrived on scene and located the boaters approximately 20 minutes later. The crew provided lifejackets for the two boaters and assisted with dewatering the boat."This case, like others we respond to, stresses the importance of having all of the required equipment before leaving the pier," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Andrew Vardakis, the boarding officer aboard the MLB. "Although our crew had an excellent response time and was able to render assistance, had the two gentleman gone into the water without lifejackets, this particular case may have had a different outcome."The boat was towed to Liberty Marina. No injuries were reported.
