Coast Guard responds to sheen in Sandy Hook Bay

NEW YORK  — The Coast Guard responded to a light sheen in Sandy Hook Bay, today.

At approximately 2:24 p.m. Sector Command Center New York watchstandards received report of an unknown light sheen from an unknown source in Sandy Hook Bay.

Station Sandy Hook launched a 47-foot Motor Life Boat. Once on scene the boatcrew members confirmed the report that there was a light sheen that stretched approximately 300 yards wide and two miles in length.

Horse Shoe Cove was deemed the only sensitive area that could potentially be impacted by the sheen.

Members of Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, FOSCR and the National Park Services deployed approximately 20-feet of hard boom near the environmentally sensitive area as a precaution.

The Coast Guard and other local agencies are working together to determine the source of the sheen.

At approximately 9:00 p.m., state and federal responders have been unable to relocate the sheen.

The cause of the sheen is under investigation.
