Local Coasties to help with maintenance aboard historic Buffalo fire boat

October 26, 2015

BUFFALO, NY — Chief Petty Officers from U.S. Coast Guard Sector Buffalo are scheduled to voluntarily assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the oldest working fire boat in the country, the Edward M. Cotter, Tuesday in Buffalo.

The Edward M. Cotter, Buffalo’s primary fire boat, began its service to the City of Buffalo in 1900.

This is the latest example in the proud tradition of active duty Coast Guard members giving back to the community and specifically in this case, the public vessel that assists in keeping the Buffalo maritime community safe.  Members plan to conduct interior maintenance aboard the vessel to help prepare it for the winter season and maintain its historic value.

With a pumping capacity equal to that of 11 firetrucks, the boat's readiness is critical to the protection of the wide range of structures that line Buffalo’s shores.  In addition to its firefighting capabilities, the Cotter serves as Buffalo’s only ice breaking resource.

Media interested in photos, video or interviews with Coast Guard members should contact Ensign Katelyn Waddle, the public affairs officer at Sector Buffalo, at katelyn.e.waddle@uscg.mil no later than 4 p.m., Monday.
