Photo Release: Coast Guard medevacs man near Beaufort, NC

September 4, 2016

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard medevaced a man Sunday after he injured his foot southwest of Beaufort. Watchstanders at Station Fort Macon in Atlantic Beach received a call from a woman aboard a 17-foot pleasure craft at about 1:15 p.m. stating her husband cut his foot on some seashells while wading in Bulkhead Channel at the western tip of Carrot Island. The man experienced a deep laceration to the bottom of his foot that sent shots of pain up his leg when he put weight on it. A 29-foot Response Boat-Small (RBS) crew launched from Station Fort Macon at about 1:25 p.m.

The crew arrived on scene, took aboard the injured man and administered first aid with gauze and bandages. The crew kept the man's foot elevated and transported him to Radio Island Wildlife Ramp. He was placed in the care of awaiting Morehead City EMS at about 1:40 p.m., and transported to Carteret General Hospital. "Today's case was a great example of what training to be proficient can do for a boat crew," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Cameron Haywood, RBS coxswain for the case. "Thankfully we were able to get to the patient before he lost too much blood and put him in the hands of medical experts. Our great working relationship with Morehead City EMS really paid off for us and the patient today."
