SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The crews of a Coast Guard rescue helicopter and a Puerto Rico Police marine unit combined efforts to rescue three boaters stranded on a reef Tuesday night near Palomino Island, just off Fajardo, Puerto Rico. The rescued men reportedly were forced to abandon an 18-foot-wooden vessel after it struck a rock and began taking on water. NEW ORLEANS - The Coast Guard is responding to a report of an allision between a towing vessel with 22 barges and a railroad bridge near Vicksburg, Mississippi, Tuesday. The towing vessel Ron W. Callegan allided with the Vicksburg Railroad Bridge, after which nine barges containing coal broke free, two of which sank. The Coast Guard has implemented a safety zone on the Lower Mississippi River from mile marker 438 to mile marker 426 to restrict maritime traffic to those vessels needed in the response.... MEMPHIS – The Coast Guard is investigating a barge allision at mile marker 661.7 on the Lower Mississippi River, near Helena, Arkansas, Tuesday. The vessel Cynthia G. Esper reportedly allided with the pier of the Helena Highway Bridge, after which four barges of denatured alcohol it was transporting broke away from the towboat at 10:12 p.m. The damaged barges reportedly contain 2,472,162 gallons of denatured alcohol. The barges were reportedly secured at 3:36 a.m., with damage found to two barges, which are reportedly taking on water.... [Read More]
