MIAMI —Coast Guard and partner agencies are stepping up enforcement of illegally operated passenger boats in the waters along Florida’s coast prior to and during the Labor Day weekend. Over the past several months there has been an increase in the illegal and unsafe operation of passenger boats less than 100 tons, and many passengers are unaware of the safety requirements regulated by the Coast Guard. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound in New Haven, Connecticut, received a call on VHF marine radio channel 16 Tuesday at approximately 8 a.m. from the 96-foot commercial fishing vessel Hannah Boden stating a 23-year-old male aboard lacerated his hand while fishing.... KODIAK, Alaska — The Coast Guard medevaced a 45-year-old woman from the cruise ship Celebrity Solstice near Sitka, Alaska, Monday. An Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew conducted the hoist and transferred the ailing passenger to awaiting emergency medical services in Sitka. Coast Guard 17th District command center watchstanders in Juneau were notified of an ailing passenger by the medical team aboard the Celebrity Solstice.  Watchstanders consulted the duty flight surgeon who recommended the medevac.... The 328-foot Netherlands-flagged motor vessel, Bermuda Islander, lost power and propulsion Monday at approximately 9 p.m. before running aground near Salem, New Jersey. No injuries or pollution have been reported. There were 12 people aboard the ship when it ran aground.... [Read More]
