Coast Guard assists five people on Detroit River

May 20, 2015

DETROIT – The Coast Guard assisted five people aboard a pleasure craft that was disabled near the Ambassador Bridge on the Detroit River Tuesday evening.

The names of the boaters are not being released, and there is no Coast Guard imagery.

At about 8:40 p.m., a person aboard a 16-foot pleasure craft reported to a search-and-rescue coordinator at Coast Guard Sector Detroit that the vessel was disabled due to low fuel near the main channel of the Detroit River. Due to a report of water coming in over the stern and the number of people aboard, the SAR coordinator determined it to be a distress situation, issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and directed the response of Station Belle Isle.

Station Belle Isle’s 25-foot rescue boat was diverted from patrol to assess the situation. The boat crew arrived on scene with the vessel, which was anchored just outside the channel in Canadian waters. The boat crew towed the vessel safely to the Delray boat ramp in Detroit.
