Boating public notice Titans of Mavericks Surf Competition

February 11, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO — The Titans of Mavericks Surf Competition is a one-day "Big Wave" surfing competition scheduled to occur Friday between 6 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the vicinity of Pillar Point. The competition only occurs when 15-20 foot waves are sustained for over 24-hours.

The dynamic nature of breaking surf in the vicinity of the event creates inherent hazards for both participants and spectators. The day of the competition, Coast Guard will be enforcing a safety zone extending 1,000 yards from Sail Rock. Exact areas will be marked by buoys on the day of the event. The regulated area is divided into a competition area and a controlled movement area where the movement of all vessels, including spectators, will be directed by Coast Guard. Coast Guard and San Mateo County Harbor District crews will be in the event area and ready to respond in case of an emergency.

Spectators choosing to view the event from the water should do so at their own risk, and should exercise extreme caution, remain aware of changing surf conditions, and ensure their vessel is of appropriate design, construction and outfitted with proper safety equipment for operation in a dynamic offshore environment. In the event of an on-water emergency, contact the Coast Guard Command Center at (415) 399-3547 or via VHF radio Channel 16.
