HOUSTON — A man wearing a lifejacket and clinging to his overturned kayak in Christmas Bay, about 10 miles northeast of Freeport, was hoisted to safety by a Coast Guard helicopter crew at 5:51 p.m. Thursday.
The man called Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders at 5 p.m., reporting that his 13-foot green kayak had overturned and he was unable to get back to shore.
An Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew lowered their rescue swimmer to the man in a remote area of Christmas Bay. The rescue swimmer helped the man get his kayak to shore and they were hoisted into the helicopter. The aircrew dropped the man to safety at Scholes International Airport in Galveston.
