Coast Guard and Local agencies need help with search for missing kayaker near Marblehead, Mass.

July 23, 2016

BOSTON — The Coast Guard and other local agencies are searching for what may be a person in the water near Marblehead, Saturday.

At about about 11:40 a.m., a good Samaritan notified authorities of an unmanned and unmarked 10-foot grey, green, and black kayak found adrift three nautical miles east of Marblehead with a dead cell phone onboard.

Unsure whether a person is in distress or if the kayak simply drifted out from land, and with no identifying information written on the kayak, the Coast Guard has launched a search for a possible person in the water in the near Marblehead.

A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Gloucester and a MH-60 Jayhawk aircrew from Air Station Cape Cod were diverted from their patrols and are diligently searching the area but have no sightings or additional leads.

“If we could reach out to the owners, we could easily discover if a person were in distress,” said Mr. Petrarca command duty officer at the First Coast Guard District Command Center. “We are charging the cell phone found aboard for clues of who the possible person in the water may be."

Petrarca explained that since no other information was on the adrift vessel, we are exersizing due diligence in case someone is in trouble.

If you have any information or questions please contact Coast Guard Sector Boston Command Center at 617.223.3201.
