Coast Guard and partner agencies rescue 15 people from a sinking vessel near the Golden Gate Bridge

September 2, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO — U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco responded Thursday to a mayday call from the 50-foot sport fishing vessel New Seeker. The call, received at approximately 4:30 p.m., reported that the vessel was taking on water in the vicinity of Kirby Cove near the Golden Gate Bridge.

Coast Guard Station Golden Gate and Marin County Fire Department immediately launched rescue boats and safely removed 13 passengers and two crewmembers from the vessel. One passenger was reported to have suffered a head laceration and was transferred to local EMS for treatment.

Currently there is no report of pollution from the vessel and salvage operations are underway.

"Today, we were reminded of the dangers of operating on the sea," said Capt. Tony Ceraolo, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Commander. "Thanks to quick thinking and collaborative action by Marin County Fire, Coast Guard Station Golden Gate and the Sector San Francisco Command Center, 15 people were rescued and the vessel New Seeker safeguarded."

The Coast Guard is actively investigating the cause of the incident and monitoring salvage operations.
