Coast Guard assists 3 boaters 12 miles southwest of Point Loma

July 26, 2016

SAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard assisted three boaters after their vessel began taking on water 12 miles southwest of Point Loma, Tuesday.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego's Joint Harbor Operations Center received a notification from a 26-foot pleasure craft reporting that there were three persons on board and the vessel was taking on water.

A Sector MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was immediately diverted, along with the Coast Guard Cutter Haddock and a Station San Diego 45-foot Response Boat-medium crew to assist.

The Jayhawk crew arrived on scene and lowered their rescue swimmer to assess the boater's injures and severity of incoming water. The Haddock arrived on scene soon after, transferred two crewmembers and dewatering pumps to the boat. They were able to secure the source of flooding and successfully dewater the vessel.

The Haddock's crew is towing the vessel to the Shelter Island boat ramp.
