Coast Guard assists 3 disabled boaters in Essex Creek

BALTIMORE — The Coast Guard assisted three boaters after their boat became disabled in Essex Creek just south of Janes Island State Park, Thursday afternoon.Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region received notification from Coast Guard Station Crisfield personnel of a disabled vessel with three people aboard in Essex Creek, at approximately 3:30 p.m.The operator of the vessel requested the Coast Guard relay a marine assistance request broadcast (MARB) on their behalf.Watchstanders at Sector Maryland-NCR dispatched a Station Crisfield 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew to take the vessel in tow due to lack of traffic in the area and the possibility of inclement weather.The Station Crisfield rescue crew took the vessel in tow and brought it safely to the Crisfield Boat Ramp."This time of year we often have storms come through In the afternoon - late evening," said Lt. Cmdr. Sara Wallace, Sector Maryland-NCR, chief of response. "I urge mariners to have communication capability, preferably a VHF radio so that they can call for help if needed as in this case."
