November 13, 2015

NEW YORK – A Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook boarding team assisted in the apprehension of a man wanted on two outstanding warrants of unlawful sexual contact at the Atlantic Highland Marina in Atlantic Highland, New Jersey, Friday.

At approximately 12 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York in Staten Island, New York, received report of an unmanned sailing vessel in the vicinity of Belford Harbor, New Jersey.

Sector New York watchstanders launched a Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook 47-foot Motor Life Boat rescue crew to the scene.

Once on scene the rescue crew confirmed the sailing vessel was not unmanned and had an adult male and a minor aboard. The rescue crew escorted the sailing vessel to the Atlantic Highlands Marina.

Once safely moored a Station Sandy Hook boarding team conducted a post SAR boarding aboard the sailing vessel.

The operator of the sailing vessel would not produce identification and the sailing vessel was not registered.

The boarding team notified Sector New York, requested assistance from the New Jersey State Police, and detained the operator.

New Jersey State Police and Atlantic highlands Police department arrived on scene at approximately 4 p.m.

The Station Sandy Hook boarding team transferred custody of the operator to the New Jersey State Police for extradition to Maine authorities.

"This is an example of an aware public promptly reporting issues to the Coast Guard and the outstanding cooperation we have with our state and municipal agencies," said Cmdr. Dwight Collins, Coast Guard Sector New York Chief of Response.
