Coast Guard assists disabled vessel with 3 people aboard near Noyo River

July 15, 2016

ALAMEDA, Calif. - Coast Guard crews assisted three people aboard the Senile, a 35-foot vessel, after the boat's captain reported a loss of steering, reduction in propulsion and experiencing heavy weather approximately 40 miles northwest of Noyo River, Calif., Thursday.

The Senile's captain contacted Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay command center watchstanders at 6:04 a.m., Thursday, requesting assistance.

Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay Command Center watchstanders diverted crews aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Aspen, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and a Coast Guard Station Noyo River 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew.

The 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew arrived on scene at noon Thursday with plans to take the vessel in tow. Due to the  high sea state, the MLB crew was unable to transfer a person aboard the Senile, so the Dolphin helicopter crew deployed a rescue swimmer to assist in rigging the vessel for tow.

The MLB crew completed their tow of the Senile at approximately 8:30 p.m. Thursday and moored the boat in the Noyo River Harbor with no reported injuries from the Senile's crew.
