Coast Guard assists vessel in distress near Morro Bay

LOS ANGELES − The Coast Guard assisted a disabled vessel beset by heavy weather Sunday, near Morro Bay.

At approximately 11:15 a.m. the Coast Guard received a call via VHF radio channel 16 from a 23-foot pleasure craft reporting that the vessel, with four people onboard, was disabled and beset by heavy weather.The Coast Guard immediately launched a 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Station Morro Bay to assist. All passengers were instructed to put on lifejackets while resources were en route.  Station Morro Bay maintained a 15 minute communications schedule with the vessel.The Coast Guard boat crew arrived on scene and completed a safety assessment of the vessel and determined the vessel suffered a loss of engine capability. All boaters were reported to be in good condition and were towed to the nearest safe haven inside Morro Bay Harbor.The Coast Guard urges mariners to always:       *Wear life jackets while on the water.       *Always have a working marine-band radio on board.       *Carry marine flares on board the vessel.
