HONOLULU — The Coast Guard Captain of the Port is closely monitoring the movement of Tropical Cyclone Amos and has set Port Condtion Zulu and closed the port of Pago Pago, American Samoa to all inbound and outbound traffic due to severe weather, Saturday.
In preparation for Amos, the Coast Guard captain of the port strongly advised vessels of 200 gross tons or more to depart until the storm passed for safety concerns unless they received permission from the COTP to remain in port.
As a reminder, port conditions are subject to change based on the projected path and intensity of Amos.
The port conditions are:
- Condition Whiskey (IV): The ALERT condition in which winds above 34 knots (39 mph) are expected within 72 hours.
- Condition X-Ray (III): The READINESS condition in which winds above 34 knots (39 mph) are expected within 48 hours.
- Condition Yankee (II): The WARNING condition in which winds above 34 knots (39 mph) are expected within 24 hours.
- Condition Zulu (I): The DANGER condition in which winds above 34 knots (39 mph) are expected within 12 hours and until the storm has passed and is no longer a threat.
As the storm impacts the island, with the center of the storm forecast to cross the island Saturday, emergency responders may not be able to immediately assist those in danger. The public is urged to heed all evacuation orders. Mariners should seek safe harbor and shelter.
The Coast Guard will continue to Broadcast Notice to Mariners and send out a Marine Safety Information Bulletin to notify the maritime community of port condition changes. Additionally, all maritime users are requested to monitor the progress of this tropical cyclone Coand make preparations accordingly.
