Coast Guard conducts medevac from fishing vessel near Oahu

January 4, 2015

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard medically evacuated a 29-year-old man suffering chest pains approximately 92 miles southwest of Oahu, Sunday.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point safely hoisted the man from the fishing vessel, Lady Karen at 7:21 a.m., and transferred him to Queens Medical Center in Honolulu at 8:03 a.m.

The crew aboard the Lady Karen contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu at 5:25 p.m., Friday, regarding medical assistance for an ailing crewmember with a heart condition.

A Coast Guard flight surgeon was consulted and recommended a 12-hour communications schedule with the Lady Karen. The man's condition continued to worsen and the Coast Guard flight surgeon recommended a medevac based on the reported symptoms.

Once the vessel was within range the medevac was conducted. Four Dolphin helicopters provide service to the Main Hawaiian Islands. The Dolphin has a range of approximately 300 miles and is operated by a crew of four.
