Coast Guard continues search for missing teens

September 1, 2016

HOLLAND, Mich. —The U.S. Coast Guard and local first responders continue to search for two missing teenagers who were swept into the waters of Lake Michigan at Holland State Park, Wednesday evening.

The names of those involved in the case are not being released and there is no imagery or video available.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. a group of four teenage boys were swept off of the northern breakwall into the water at Holland State Park by a large wave. After being caught in strong currents, two of the boys were able to climb back onto the rocks, while the other two were last seen going under the water and not resurfacing.

There were dangerous swimming conditions at the lakeshore throughout the day, with warnings of high winds, rough seas and rip currents.

Coast Guard search and rescue boats from Stations Holland, Grand Haven and Saint Joseph, Michigan as well as a helicopter crew from Air Station Traverse City, Michigan have been on scene, actively searching for the missing boys, ages 14 and 17, throughout Wednesday night and into this morning.

An Incident Command Post has been established with local first responders on scene to coordinate a unified effort and ensure the most effective search coordination.  The U.S. Coast Guard and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department both have representatives in the command post along with other partner agencies.
