Coast Guard crew tows drifting fishing boat near Billingsgate Shoal

January 8, 2016

BOSTON — The Coast Guard responded to a disabled 48-foot fishing vessel drifting near Billingsgate Shoal in Cape Cod Bay with three people aboard Friday.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received a call via VHF-16 radio from the captain of Jersey Princess reporting his engine had overheated and would not restart.

A crew from Station Provincetown launched in a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat at approximately 7 p.m. and arrived on scene at 8:30 p.m.  Shortly after arriving on scene the Coast Guard crew began towing Jersey Princess to its homeport in Provincetown.

“A disabled boat drifting near a shoal has the potential to become very dangerous,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Andy Case, an operations unit controller at Sector Southeastern New England’s command center.  “Fortunately our crew was able to reach Jersey Princess, safely put her in tow, and bring her toward shore."

They are scheduled to arrive in Provincetown at approximately 11 p.m.
