Coast Guard ends active search for missing man in Lake Ontario

BUFFALO – The Coast Guard is suspending its active search Sunday for a man who went missing in Lake Ontario Saturday night.

The Coast Guard is not releasing the man’s name or hometown and there is no imagery available.

At approximately 7:15 p.m., Saturday, the man’s family alerted the Coast Guard and other emergency response agencies in the area that they could no longer see the man swimming in water. The man’s family stated they saw him struggling in the waves but were unable to help him.

Coast Guard Sector Buffalo issued an urgent marine information broadcast to alert mariners in the area to look out for the man and assist if possible.

Approximately thirty five hours of on scene time was spent by multiple assets searching an area in excess 112 square nautical miles.

The following search-and-rescue crews assisted with the search:

• Coast Guard Station Oswego 45-foot response boat

• Coast Guard Auxiliary boats and aircraft

• Coast Guard Air Station Detroit MH-65C Dolphin helicopter

• Canadian Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton, Ontario, CC-130 airplane

• Canadian Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton, Ontario, Griffin helicopter

• Sandy Creek Fire Department

• Oswego County Sheriff's Office

• New York State Police

• Pulaski Fire Department

• Oswego County Emergency Management
