Coast Guard escorts disabled sailing vessel near Monterey

November 30, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard responded to a disabled vessel approximately 56 miles southwest of Monterey Sunday afternoon.

At 1:19 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a report from Coast Guard Station Monterey of a 45-foot sailing vessel disabled and adrift approximately 40 miles offshore.

The vessel became disabled after last night's storm causing lines and sails to become tangled in the propeller.

The Coast Guard issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast for all vessels in the vicinity to be on the lookout for the distressed vessel. Coast Guard Cutter Pike responded from Santa Cruz, and Sector San Francisco Command Center established a communications schedule with the vessel to monitor the situation.

The vessel’s crew was able to untangle the fouled propeller and shaft just before Pike arrived on scene. The vessel is currently underway under its own power inbound to Moss Landing under escort by the Cutter Pike crew, who are prepared to assist the vessel if problems arise.

There were no injuries reported.
