Coast Guard to establish safety zones for upcoming New Year’s Eve fireworks

LOS ANGELES — The Coast Guard will establish several temporary safety zones beginning Thursday, in designated Southern California waters for the upcoming New Year’s Eve firework displays.

The safety zones may limit or prohibit navigation by commercial and recreational waterway users.

The safety zones will include a 350-foot radius around the Carnival Cruise Pier fireworks launch site, which will be in effect from 11:30 p.m., December 31, 2015 until 12:30 a.m., January 1, 2016. A 500-foot radius will also be established around the southern jetty in Marina Del Rey Harbor, which will be in effect from 8:30 p.m., December 31, 2015 until 9:30 p.m. The safety zone will also include a 350-foot radius of the Shoreline Aquatic Park fireworks launch site, which will be in effect from 8:30 p.m., December 31, 2015 until 9:30 p.m.

Entering or operating in the safety zone is prohibited unless authorized by the Captain of the Port of Los Angeles-Long Beach.

"The established safety zones are necessary to protect personnel, vessels and facilities from accidents during the firework displays, said Capt. Jennifer Williams, commanding officer, Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach. “We would like everyone to enjoy the fireworks but also stay safe and aware.”
