Coast Guard to establish safety zones for upcoming New Year’s Eve fireworks

December 30, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard will establish temporary safety zones beginning Thursday in designated Northern California waters for the upcoming New Year’s Eve firework displays. The safety zones may limit or prohibit navigation by commercial and recreational waterway users. A 700-foot safety zone radius will be established around the Tower Bridge in West Sacramento, which will be in effect Thursday from 8:50 p.m. until Friday at 9:30 p.m. A 1,000-foot safety zone radius will be established near the ferry plaza in the San Francisco Bay around the approximate position 37°47’45”N, 122°23’17”W, which will be in effect Thursday from 11:59 p.m. until Friday at 12:30 a.m. Entering or operating in the safety zone is prohibited unless authorized by the Captain of the Port of San Francisco. "We establish safety zones to protect personnel, vessels and facilities from potential accidents during the firework displays," said Capt. Greg Stump, commanding officer, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. “Firework displays should be enjoyed by all; we try to ensure everyone does it safely."  For any questions regarding the safety zones, please contact Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Waterways Safety Branch at (415) 399-3585 or D11-SMB-SectorSF-WaterwaySafety@uscg.mil .
