Coast Guard, federal, state, local agencies respond to flooding in northern Wisconsin

July 14, 2016

DULUTH, Minn. — Coast Guard, federal, state and local first responders are responding to pollution threats from flooding in Saxon Harbor, Wisconsin, along the shore of Lake Superior, Wednesday.

Initial reports indicate a number of damaged and sunken boats in the area.

Coast Guard pollution responders from Marine Safety Unit Duluth are on scene to assess the situation with assistance from the U.S. Forest Service, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Iron County Sheriff’s Office, and Iron County representatives.

A hazard remains until fuel, oils, and hazardous substances on board the damaged boats are identified and mitigated. Federal, state and local responders are implementing a plan to address the environmental impact.

Boaters in the area are urged to exercise caution due to significant debris and unknown hazards to navigation in the area.
