Coast Guard, good Samaritan rescue two from grounded boat near Essex, Massachusetts

August 7, 2016

BOSTON — The Coast Guard recovered two people on Sunday from a grounded boat in Essex Bay in Essex, Massachusetts.

At about 5:45 p.m., a member aboard a 19-foot pleasure craft called watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Boston reporting that his engine failed and the boat was aground in low tide.

A 29-foot boat crew from Station Gloucester, already underway for another case, made way to the disabled boat.

They arrived on scene at about 6:15 p.m., but the boat was in an area too shallow to reach. A good Samaritan with a skiff assisted in the rescue. He maneuvered into the area and safely picked up the two passengers, a child and a woman in need of her medication. He transferred them to the Coast Guard boat, and crew brought them to Conomo Point, where a friend of the family was awaiting.

By this time, with the tide lower, the remaining four people in the pleasure craft anchored it and walked to Crane Bach in Ipswich. They were met by Ipswich Police Department who took them to their car at the boat ramp.

The owner of the vessel plans to recover the boat on Monday during high tide.

The Coast Guard has issued a safety marine broadcast warning mariners of the disabled vessel.
