Coast Guard, Guardian Flight medevac 6 after auto accident in Atka, Alaska

June 15, 2016

ANCHORAGE, Alaska— A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak, Alaska, HC-130 Hercules air plane aircrew medevaced six people from Adak after an automobile accident in Atka, 100 miles east of Adak, Tuesday evening.

The Coast Guard aircrew rendezvoused with a Guardian Flight crew who had transported the six injured people to Adak. The Coast Guard then transported the six to waiting emergency medical service personnel in Anchorage.

Coast Guard District 17 watchstanders received a report from Guardian Flight at 7:19 p.m. requesting assistance for medical transport after an automobile accident involving 10 people. Watchstanders requested the HC-130 crew to divert from Cordova.

“Conducting a rescue in a place as remote as Atka requires a coordinated effort,” said Lt. Melanie Collier, a Coast Guard District 17 watchstander. “Our aircrews routinely train and partner with emergency service personnel to conduct medevacs and transport the injured to medical care.”

The on scene weather was reported as 26-mph winds.
