Coast Guard issues high water safety advisory on Lower Mississippi River

MEMPHIS – The Coast Guard issued a high water safety advisory on the Lower Mississippi River from mile marker 869, near Caruthersville, Missouri to mile marker 303, near Natchez, Mississippi, Thursday.

Capt. Timothy Wendy, commander, Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River and Captain of the Port, issued the high water safety advisory in response to the rising river level.

Sector Lower Mississippi River has been conducting outreach with U.S Army Corps of Engineers, and the marine public. The Coast Guard is Broadcasting Notice to Mariners, on VHF Channel 16 to ensure the safety of the maritime community. The Coast Guard is asking the boating public to avoid using the river due to the high river flows and significant debris.

This High Water Safety Advisory is expected to remain in effect for several weeks based on the National Weather Service forecast.
