Coast Guard lifts Captain of the Port closures for Coos Bay Harbor entrance

February 2, 2016

WARRENTON, Ore. — The Coast Guard lifted a three-day Captain of the Port order Monday night that restricted vessels with a draft deeper than 20 feet from navigating the Coos Bay bar entrance due to potential debris in the navigation channel.

Two Panamanian-flagged bulk carriers that were affected by the order have been cleared for transit across the bar.

The Coast Guard Captain of the Port for Oregon and southern Washington issued the restriction Friday due to concern of debris from the Sara Jo, a fishing vessel that capsized and was destroyed near the North Jetty last week. A sonar survey of the channel conducted Monday afternoon by a private company revealed the channel was clear of any hazards.

After reviewing the survey results, the Captain of the Port deemed the channel safe for transit.
