Coast Guard, local agencies rescue injured windsurfer near Foster City

June 3, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard and local agencies rescued an injured windsurfer in distress near Foster City Tuesday evening.

At 5:09 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received notification from San Mateo County Communications and a good Samaritan regarding a person who appeared to be in distress and floating with his windsurfing equipment approximately one mile north of the 3rd Avenue boat ramp in Foster City.

The Coast Guard immediately launched a 45-foot Response Boat — Medium boatcrew from Coast Guard Station San Francisco and coordinated with boatcrews from Foster City, South San Francisco and Alameda Fire Departments to render assistance.

The Coast Guard response boatcrew located the distressed windsurfer after being assisted over the radio by the good Samaritan. Once the person was recovered, it was determined he had sustained minor injuries and showed signs of mild hypothermia.

He was transported to Coyote Point Marina, and awaiting emergency medical personnel transported him to a local medical facility for further evaluation.

“When windsurfing or engaging in other water sports, it’s always important to plan for an emergency,” said Petty Officer Jason Todd, a Station San Francisco boatswain's mate. “Our crew was able to quickly locate him; having a plan, buddy system and checking local weather conditions are critical safety reminders for anyone on or near the water."
