JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a man Sunday near New Smyrna Beach after he failed to return home after swimming.
Missing is Timothy Akins, 60.
Akins was last seen wearing a yellow shirt and riding a blue and silver mountain bike.
Akins left home to go swimming in the general location of Ponce Inlet Jetty to Flagler Avenue and was scheduled to return at 6 p.m. A concerned family member contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Ponce de Leon at approximately 9:30 p.m. to report Akins overdue after Akins failed to return.
A 24-foot rescue boat crew from Station Ponce de Leon, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Clearwater and rescue crews from Volusia County Sheriff's Office initiated search efforts.
The public is encouraged to remain vigilant while in the area.
