Coast Guard, local authorities searching Lake Michigan for missing kayaker

MILWAUKEE — Coast Guard and local emergency crews are searching the waters of Lake Michigan near Port Washington, Wisconsin, for a man who went missing while kayaking Tuesday evening.

The man's name is not being released and there is no Coast Guard imagery or video available for this case.

About 3:30 p.m., CST, the watchstander at Coast Guard Station Sheboygan, Wisconsin, was notified by the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Department of a male kayaker who came ashore to the south of the Port Washington Power Plant. The man reported he had been kayaking with his brother who was on another kayak and did not make it to shore.

The Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan Command Center in Milwaukee directed the launch of a Station Sheboygan boat crew aboard a 45-foot response boat to begin searching. An aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Michigan, was also launched to assist aboard a Dolphin helicopter.

A sheriff's department boat crew conduced a shoreline search near the area where the men launched and a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources fixed-wing aircraft has also been called on to assist with the search.
