Coast Guard, locals rescue kayaker in Hammond, Ore.

WARRENTON, Ore. — Coast Guard and local agency crews rescued a kayaker, who was wearing a life jacket and clinging to nearby pilings after his kayak capsized, south of Hammond Marina, Tuesday.A 29-foot Response Boat-Small II crew, from Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment in Ilwaco, Washington, pulled the man aboard and safely transported him to waiting emergency medical service personnel at the marina, where the kayaker denied EMS assistance.Local Fire and EMS sent landside units to assist, but they were unable to reach the kayaker. Clatsop County Marine Unit personnel recovered the kayak and took it to the marina.Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received a 911 relay call at 5:42 p.m. from Astoria dispatchers with a caller reporting his brother, an elderly Vietnam pilot, was on a kayak that overturned and was unable to get back in. The boat crew and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria launched in response, but the helicopter crew stood down after arriving on scene as the boat crew already rescued the kayaker.Weather on scene reported as clear with wind speeds of 11 to 17 mph, an air temperature of 75 F and water temperature of 66 F.
