Coast Guard medevacs 85-year-old man 220 miles south of Point Loma

SAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard medically evacuated an 85-year-old man from a cruise ship approximately 220 miles south of Point Loma, San Diego, Friday.

At 6:07 p.m., Friday, watchstanders at the Eleventh Coast Guard District in Alameda, California, received a report from the crew of the cruise ship Carnival Princess that an 85-year-old male passenger was experiencing symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding.

The Coast Guard duty flight surgeon recommended that the patient be medically evacuated and taken to a hospital for emergency care. 

A Coast Guard Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was launched, arrived on scene, then safely hoisted the man at approximately 8:50 p.m.

A Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento, California, HC-130 Hercules aircraft also launched due to the distance from shore.

At approximately 10:50 p.m., the Jayhawk crew returned to Sector San Diego, where he was transferred to awaiting EMS.

He was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, in Hillcrest. He was in stable condition.

There is no video footage from the case.
