WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard medevaced an ailing man from a charter fishing vessel off the North Carolina coast Thursday.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received notification via VHF marine radio at 8:51 a.m. that a 46-year-old male was experiencing chest pains approximately 38 miles southeast of Oregon Inlet aboard the 57-foot charter fishing vessel Tuna Trappe.
Sector North Carolina issued an urgent marine information broadcast at 8:53 a.m. and launched a 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet and a 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Station Oregon Inlet at approximately 9:00 a.m., with an EMS team from Dare County aboard the RBS.
The boat crews arrived on scene at approximately 9:50 a.m. Coast Guard and EMS personnel boarded the Tuna Trappe to asses the ailing man's condition and administer first aid.
The three vessels returned to Station Oregon Inlet, arriving at approximately 10:35 a.m. and the man was transported to Outer Banks Hospital for treatment.
“We all have basic first aid and CPR training, but having the local EMTs come out and assist us is invaluable,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Travis Porter, the coxswain of the MLB crew. “Our common goal is to get the patient to safety as quickly as possible.”
