Coast Guard medevacs injured man near Juneau, Alaska

JUNEAU, Alaska — A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced a 70-year-old man who fell from a 30-foot cliff near Juneau, Alaska, Tuesday.

The Jayhawk crew transferred the injured man to awaiting emergency medical service personnel in Juneau.

Coast Guard Sector Juneau command center watchstanders received a call from the Juneau Police Department reporting that a man had sustained a head injury after falling off of a cliff in the vicinity of Funter Bay, approximately 200-yards from the state dock, and requested assistance.

Watchstanders dispatched a Coast Guard Station Juneau 45-foot Response Boat — Medium boatcrew with an emergency medical technician aboard and the Air Station Sitka Jayhawk crew.

“Our hoist capable helicopters are an ideal resource to respond to land or sea emergency medical situations,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Georgette Lopez, watchstander, Sector Juneau. “Our crews train regularly in order to safely and efficiently transport an injured person to a higher level of care.”

Weather conditions at the time of the incident were reported as calm winds with clear skies.
