ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A 70-year-old man was medevaced from a 65-foot charter fishing boat by the Coast Guard seven miles west of Sanibel, Florida, Saturday.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, Florida, received a call from a crewmember aboard the Sea Trek, via VHF-FM channel 16, stating a man had been injured and needed emergency medical assistance.
A Coast Guard flight surgeon was notified and recommended the man be medevaced.
At around 2:50 p.m, a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boat crew from Coast Guard Station Fort Myers Beach, Florida, arrived on scene and transported the man, his daughter and his grandson to the station where Fort Myers Beach EMS was waiting. The man was transported to HealthPark Hospital for further medical assistance.
"It's always best, during incidents like this, for us to have all relevant medical information," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Grant Lacy, the officer of the day at the station. "We were able to aid this man further because we had a distinct timeline of events and medical history."
