Coast Guard medevacs woman 112 miles off Galveston

November 13, 2014

HOUSTON — A Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew medevaced a 34-year-old woman off an offshore supply vessel approximately 112 miles offshore of Galveston today.

Watchstanders at Sector Houston-Galveston received a call at approximately 10 a.m. from a crewmember aboard the 277-foot OSV Norman Flower reporting that a 34-year-old female crewmember was experiencing a rash on her arms and thighs.

Watchstanders dispatched an Air Station Houston rescue helicopter crew to respond. An ATC Mobile HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew was also launched to provide top cover.

The helicopter crew lowered their rescue swimmer down to the OSV to assess the woman’s condition and prepare her for a hoist. The helicopter crew then hoisted the woman aboard the helicopter and transported her to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. The woman is reported to be in stable condition.

“Whenever we are responding to a case that is a significant distance offshore the risk is elevated, but with the expertise of our Air Station Houston crew along with the ATC Mobile crew we were able to safely transport the woman to UTMB," said Zack Edwards, the command duty officer at Sector Houston-Galveston.
