Coast Guard medevacs woman from motorboat near Ocracoke, NC

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard medevaced an injured woman from a grounded motorboat Tuesday east of Cedar Island. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina in Wilmington received a mayday call from the boat's operator at approximately 4 p.m., reporting his 42-foot motorboat ran aground three miles east of Cedar Island near Ocracoke. The operator stated a 34-year-old woman suffered injuries to her back and arms during the grounding. A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City was diverted from a training flight to assist. The helicopter crew arrived on scene at approximately 6 p.m., hoisted the woman and her boyfriend, and took them to the Michael J. Smith Airfield in Beaufort, where they were transferred to local EMS and taken to Carteret General Hospital. The boat operator remained on scene to attempt to refloat his boat with the assistance of TowBoat U.S.
