BOSTON — A Coast Guard air crew medically transported a 62-year-old man late Wednesday from Martha's Vineyard to Massachusetts General Hospital.
An employee at Martha's Vineyard Hospital contacted operations watchstanders at the 1st Coast Guard District Command Center at about 10:30 p.m. requesting emergency transport for a man suffering from a serious brain condition.
With civilian medevac options unavailable due to weather conditions, and 4-6 hour window to get the man medical treatment, a MH-60 helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod launched to assist. The Coast Guard air crew arrived at Martha's Vineyard Hospital and safely transferred the man into the helicopter. From there, he was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital for further treatment.
"There was some dense fog from the air station out to the island," said Lt. Kyle Bertoluzzi, a helicopter pilot at Air Station Cape Cod. "It was also dark, which made the transport more difficult, but this is what we train for."
The man is listed in stable condition.
