March 19, 2015

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Coast Guard members held a luncheon for Woman’s History Month at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, Thursday.

Dorothy Kurtz, a World War II SPAR, was a guest at the luncheon and shared her military experience with attending Coast Guard members. The term SPAR was created for the Woman’s Reserve, which signifie the Coast Guard‘s motto of Semper Paratus, Always Ready.

During the luncheon, a panel of Senior Coast Guard leaders including Kurtz answered questions and spoke about their individual military experiences and challenges throughout their career.

“It was an amazing experience to be able to listen to these woman’s journeys especially Mrs. Kurtz,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Nicole Perez, a crewmember at the sector. “She paved the way for us to be able to have the amazing opportunities we have today.”
