Coast Guard, partner agencies rescue family near Long Beach, Wash.

July 3, 2016

WARRENTON, Ore. — A Coast Guard helicopter crew, working with Long Beach Police Department personnel and park rangers, rescued a family of three, including a 20-month-old child, who were reportedly lost in Leadbetter Point State Park, Washington, Saturday.

An Air Station Astoria MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew landed in a clearing near a beach to rescue the lost family and transferred them to Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment, Washington, where park rangers met them to take them back to their vehicle.

"This case is a good reminder to heed caution signs and stay on trails in state parks, especially when hiking with children," said Mark Dobney, Sector Columbia River command duty officer. "Fortunately this story had a happy ending, but many of these cases don't."

Coast Guard Sector Columbia River watchstanders received a request for assistance from Long Beach Police Department around 9 p.m. to rescue hikers who had reportedly gotten off trail and were lost.

There were no reports of injuries.
