Coast Guard reiterates storm warning for coastal southern New England

September 5, 2016

BOSTON — The Coast Guard reminds mariners and coastal communities in Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and the Islands to use extreme caution on and near the water today and through midweek.

Storm conditions are expected to impact the area today with 30 to 50 mph wind gusts and 15 to 40-foot seas forecasted into Tuesday. Additionally, high surf and dangerous rip currents are expected along the coast through Wednesday.

Boat owners are urged to avoid getting underway at all costs and verify all mooring lines are secure. Others on the coast are urged to stow any loose items along the waterfront including paddle craft and equipment.

Air crews from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod have been flying storm tracks daily since Saturday to broadcast warnings of the impending storm to offshore mariners. Additionally, Coast Guard cutters and small boat stations in the area have increased their readiness status in anticipation of the deteriorating sea conditions.

Mariners are advised to track the storm via the National Weather Service website at http://www.weather.gov/.
