BALTIMORE — The Coast Guard is reminding mariners to be safe on the water during the 4th of July holiday weekend.
Several fireworks displays are planned throughout the region, which may affect boater traffic.
Mariners are urged to transit these areas with caution, to keep a sharp lookout for other watercraft, and are reminded to heed the directions of patrolling law enforcement and public safety officials.
Absent specific guidance, mariners should remain 300 yards from any fireworks discharge site. Questions regarding fireworks displays above or near navigable waters may be directed to Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region at (410) 576-2693.
"We want everyone to have fun and enjoy the holiday weekend, but more importantly we want boaters to return home to family and friends," said Lt. Cmdr. Sara Wallace, chief of response at Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region.
Other safety tips for the holiday weekend include:
Have a designated driver – In the sun and out on the water, boaters are more susceptible to the affects of alcohol.
Wear a lifejacket – Even within arms length, donning a lifejacket during an accident can become impossible. If a boater loses consciousness, access to a lifejacket will do nothing for them.
Having a reliable form of communication – Cell phones can lose service and power. Having a marine band radio and calling out on VHF-Channel 16 will provide a boater with the best chance of response.
Downloading the Coast Guard app will provide access to essential services and information most commonly requested by boaters.
