Coast Guard rescues 2 adults, 1 child near Matagorda Island

December 27, 2015

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Coast Guard aircrew rescued two adults and one minor from an oil platform in Mesquite Bay Saturday evening.

At approximately 10 p.m., Coast Guard Station Port Aransas watchstanders received a call from a man stating he and two others swam to a platform after their boat capsized around 6 p.m.

Sector Corpus Christi watchstanders launched an MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Corpus Christi to conduct the rescue. The individuals reported no injuries and were transported to Rockport Airport.

“This time of year brings unpredictable weather and it's important to prepare accordingly,” said Lt. Cmdr. Osvaldo Vera, a search and rescue mission coordinator for Sector Corpus Christi. “Thankfully, they were wearing life jackets and able to make a distress call after their vessel capsized.”

Boaters are reminded to always check the weather forecast and prepare accordingly with appropriate personal protective equipment, always have enough life jackets for everyone aboard, have sufficient and appropriate medical supplies, always carry a marine VHF radio capable of calling for help and have a boating plan and communicate it with friends and family.
