Coast Guard rescues 2 fishermen 6 miles west of San Francisco

February 15, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard rescued two men from a capsized commercial fishing vessel that was located approximately six miles west of San Francisco Monday.

Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a distress call from the commercial fishing vessel Jack D 7 at 10:02 a.m.   The vessel's crew reported that it was taking on water and was going down fast.  The crew passed their latitude and longitude position to the Coast Guard just before the vessel sank; however, the position was not accurate.

The Coast Guard's state-of-the-art Rescue 21 system pinpointed the vessel's last communication approximately six miles away from where the crew reported it to be.  A Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco helicopter crew and Station Golden Gate Motor Lifeboat crew were dispatched immediately, and the boatcrew arrived at 10:40 a.m. and retrieved the two-crew members from the water.  Neither of the crewmembers were injured; however, both suffered from mild hypothermia.  They were taken to Station Golden Gate where they refused further medical evaluation and were released.

The bow of the capsized vessel remained visible above the surface of the water when the motor lifeboat departed the area.  The vessel is believed to have approximately 200 gallons of diesel fuel onboard.  The owner has contacted a salvage company to retrieve the vessel.
