JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Coast Guard boatcrew rescued two people from a sinking catamaran in the Intracoastal Waterway, off the coast of Jacksonville, Thursday.
Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Jacksonville received the initial call at approximately 4:30 p.m., reporting that a 41-foot catamaran was taking on water as a result of striking the south jetty of the St. Johns River Intracoastal Waterway.
A Coast Guard boatcrew aboard a 25-foot Response Boat — Small was launched to assist. The crew removed both people aboard the sinking boat and later transferred them to a Florida Fish and Wildlife crew that arrived on scene.
The incident is under investigation by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The catamaran is currently not a hazard to navigation and is being salvaged by Tow Boat U.S.
