Coast Guard rescues 4 after boat fire near Vineyard Sound, Mass.

August 20, 2016

BOSTON — A Coast Guard crew responded to a pleasure craft fire with four people aboard near Vineyard Sound, Saturday morning.

At about 4:43 a.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector South Eastern New England received a distress call from the master of the 35-foot pleasure craft Angler, stating there was a fire aboard the vessel with four people aboard. It was reported all aboard were abandoning ship into an inflatable life raft.

The watchstander dispatched a 47-foot motor life boat crew from Station Menemsha who arrived on scene at approximately 5 a.m. to rescue the passengers.  The Coast Guard crew transferred four adults to the rescue vessel and no injuries were reported.  After inspecting the pleasure craft it was determined the small fire was contained and extinguished by a fire suppression system onboard the vessel.

Angler is currently being towed to its homeport in Falmouth by commercial tow.
