Coast Guard rescues disables fishing vessel 115 miles out to sea

April 18, 2015

BOSTON — Rescue crews from the Coast Guard Cutter Legare are towing the 61-foot fishing vessel Angela Michelle to land today after their anchor line became wrapped around their rudder and propeller about 115 miles east of Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Sector Boston Command Center watchstanders received a call from the Angela Michelle crew that their anchor line was fouled and they were unable to make way.

The Coast Guard Cutter Legare, patrolling nearby, diverted to the scene to assess. With the Angela Michelle crew unable to free the line at sea, the Legare took the vessel in tow toward Gloucester, Massachusetts.

"Due to their distance out at sea, a commercial tow wasn't available," said Petty Officer 1st Class Aaron Silva, the operations unit coordinator at the Sector Boston Command Center.  He said once they are closer to land, Coast Guard Station Gloucester plans to relieve Legare and bring Angela Michelle to the pier.

The waves on scene were two feet and the wind was 10 knots, gusting to 15.
